If we don't like our voice, we're not going to be able to properly communicate our thoughts when we're speaking or singing. In today's modern world, we have the ability to record and play back our voices, which means that the way we perceive the sound of our voice is different than the way we actually hear it. The way we perceive our voice versus the way that it actually is makes us more critical of our voice than others are when they hear our voice. This perception is cause by bone conduction which is a phenomenon where you are not hearing an audible tone or an audible sound with your ears, but are instead experiencing the vibration of the bones in your body. When you hear your voice recorded, it's different from what you thought it was and that's traumatic. It's almost like you're presented with a stranger, and you say to yourself, "if that's what my voice sounds like, I don't like it." In order to overcome the hurdle of hating your voice, you have to sing or speak into a microphone and listen back. I call this a vocal assessment. I take a very objective point of view and say, okay, to me, to my ears, it might sound a little crackly, tinny, or nasally, but I have to come up with some good things about my voice. If you've had a negative view of your voice or a negative picture of your voice, let's turn that narrative around and speak life over your voice. Because you absolutely can overcome any problem or any challenge that you may have. You can progress and get better and more excellent in your technical knowledge and skill, but you must love your own voice and speak life over it. There's nothing wrong with modeling after singers that you like, but we shouldn't hide behind their gift and skill. That's what I was doing. So I stripped away all the pretense and fluff, and found that my most effective voice was my simple voice. If you find yourself doing extra stuff with your voice without realizing it, or feeling like you've got to put on some kind of a mask or a persona when you speak or sing, that might be an indication that you don't really like what's there beneath all of that. The image of your voice is unchangeable, because it's encoded into your DNA, but the identity of your voice is changeable because it can either reflect and be in concert and agreement with the image, or it can be different. You can go back five, maybe 10 years in the past and listen to old recordings of yourself to find out if your voice has changed drastically. If it has, you can turn back the clock and return to an earlier form of your voice through proper exercise. The voice for some tends to change age, while for others, their voice never changes. That's because they have adopted healthy vocal habits that keep their voice young and healthy, whereas others either don't know or never invested in it, and as a result their voice ages. Anybody that has a voice owes it to themselves to invest in it. And the best way to invest in your voice right now is to check out MyVoiceMentor.com, which provides online voice coaching and community and online courses. I want to leave you with the idea that YOUR voice is your best voice and investing in it is a worthwhile lifelong pursuit.
