An important and emotional chapter is unfolding at the Decorah North nest. On March 7 at 6:35 PM, DNF laid her first egg of the 2026 season, marking a hopeful moment during what has been a difficult transition for this nest following the disappearance of Mr. North on February 25. According to information shared by the team at Raptor Resource Project, if this egg is fertile it would almost certainly have been fertilized by Mr. North before he disappeared. Female raptors are capable of storing sperm for several weeks, meaning fertilization from earlier pair bonding is still possible. This video captures: • DNF laying the egg on the evening of March 7 • A visit from UM about a day and a half later • A brief and somewhat confusing “shift change” moment at the nest When UM arrived, DNF appeared to treat his presence as a chance to take a break. However, once alone with the egg, UM seemed unsure how to respond. He curiously rolled the egg and even partially covered it with nesting fluff before stepping away. There is no indication he was attempting to harm the egg - rather, it appeared to be a young eagle still figuring out his instincts and role at the nest. DNF returned quickly, uncovered the egg, and resumed incubation. As of the evening of March 12, DNF has laid only this single egg, and a similar interaction occurred again today when UM briefly visited. Once again, the egg was rolled and lightly buried before DNF returned to resume care. At this point, there are many unknowns about how the season will unfold. What is clear is that DNF is navigating a challenging and unusual situation with determination. And while viewers understandably miss Mr. North deeply, it’s important to remember that UM is simply a young eagle trying to follow instinct and find his place in a complex moment at this nest. For now, all eyes remain on DNF as she continues caring for her precious egg.
