FKMD Fox Knives Hitam Golok Review. A Golok is a large knife used in the tropics for: clearing agricultural land; food preparation; food processing; processing coconuts and in some instances as a weapon. FKMD Fox Knives Military Division has made the Hitam Golok using modern manufacturing processes right down to the physical vapour deposition (PVD) Diamond like carbon surface coating of the blade. This PVD process produces an almost non reflective surface, hardness properties like that of diamond and added corrosion resistance. Bohler N690 Cobalt Stainless tool steel has been used for blade manufacture and FORPRENE is used as the handle material. After using the Hitam Golok out of it’s intended environment of usage,ie the tropics, I can say that based on previous experience of using similar knives in SouthEast Asia and other tropical regions, the Hitam Golok performed quite well in an un gloved hand. As I state in this review, a Golok should be designed for a one swing one cut but in order to achieve this one should be cutting vegetation suited (broad leaved jungle plants, lawyer canes/vines etc) for such a knife and you must bear this in mind for your intended end use if that involves work outside of tropical regions. Goloks and similar are often used not only for clearing agricultural land but also for food preparation, which might involve but not limited to: processing coconuts, cutting cassava, bread fruit, jack fruit, yam, taro etc. I demonstrate it’s use for some finer “kitchen” work and it performed nicely in my hands. The overall weight and balance also felt good. The nylon scabbard is Molle compatible, can be mounted on an ordinary pack and waist carry or even over the shoulder. If you intend to clear paths, blaze a trail into unknown territory, want a corrosion resistant blade, then prepare the evening meal, the Hitam Golok could be for you. Finally I thought I might mention: Anybody advocating that goloks and machetes can be used for defence against animal attack think again. Let's not fantasize here. Yes, in trained hands in certain Asian "martial arts" Goloks (with a different blade shape to the FKMD one featured here) can be used as weapons. Some channels are saying you can use machetes and the like for defence against snakes, utter rubbish, that is unless you want to actually get bitten by the snake. Also as defence against wild animal attack, also untrue in real life animal attack situations. You can also see the Hitam Golok here: http://www.fkmdknives.com/n/en/produc...
