I Stopped Taking Advice When This Happened

It took me a long time to understand the difference between someone offering opinions and someone actually guiding us. That understanding came from a moment in my early twenties when my boxing coach stepped in and forced me to take a hard look at the direction I was headed in. What he did was by no means comfortable or gentle, but it was real, and it was what I needed. More importantly, it came from a place of investment. He wasn’t standing on the sidelines telling me what he thought I should do. He got right there in the thick of it with me and made it clear that the outcome depended on the choices I was willing to make. Once we experience that kind of guidance, we start hearing advice differently for the rest of our lives. A lot of us can hopefully point to someone who stepped in at the right time, or sadly, maybe a time when we wish someone had. This is a deeply personal moment, and I'd like to share it with you all.
