What a Scared Animal Taught Me About Presence

There are moments in life when we think we’re prepared, only to discover that the situation isn’t going to meet us where we are. We have to meet it where it is. Some time back I spent a week working with a rescue horse that had been through more than any animal should ever have to endure. I walked into that situation thinking I could help her, but what I eventually realized was that I hadn’t fully shown up the way she needed. I was calm on the surface, but not truly present underneath it. What happened next forced me to step outside of my own expectations, my schedule, my confidence, and my ego, and to approach the situation from a completely different place. The lesson that came out of that experience has stayed with me ever since. Sometimes the shift we’re looking for doesn’t come from trying harder. It comes from letting go of ourselves enough to actually connect.
