This officer did a great job trying to de-escalate until the driver allegedly used force against the officers. This is consistent with de-escalation research. 00:58 The driver responds with an unusual statement, so the officer calls for backup. This follows the Force Science de-escalation principle of calling in additional resources when confronted with a potential odd interaction. 01:51 The Officer requests the driver's identification, explains again the reason for the car stop, and explains to the driver he is not free to leave. Taking time to explain to others why you are doing what you are doing and calmly explaining what is expected of them is de-escalation. 03:06 The Officer takes the time to explain what the law requires of us. This is trying to show the officer wants the driver to comply with the law, not with his personal needs or wants. 04:10 Officer tells the driver to step out of the car. What we are witnessing is non-compliance behavior coupled with verbal indicators that the driver is aware of his surroundings or able to mentally process his actions within the context of this interaction. This driver's behavior has a purpose or intent. Force Science teaches the TEB Matrix regarding de-escalation. If we applied the TEB Matrix we would conclude this person is Clear Thinking / Low Emotion / Non-compliant. This person is a cognitive aggressor.
