One of the most derided of Hammer's late output is one that has aged very well. The athleticism and saturnine appearance of Christopher Neame gives 'Dracula A.D. 1972' its core. The dialogue, which may have seemed off-key at the time, now works to push the story forward. Caroline Munro gives a great performance as the most eager to follow Alucard into the hellfire he is inviting everyone into. Later on, when she faces Dracula, her sense of horror and knowledge that her happy life is coming to an end, is something we feel far more than the fate of his more... willing victims. But the entire cast here is great. They aren't characters we love too much in that they are filled with the arrogance and superiority of privileged young people who value nothing. They are not as bad as the depraved Victorian gentlemen of 'Taste the Blood of Dracula' but the search for kicks-at-any-cost reflects that kind of decadent self indulgence that Hammer often depicts as the feeding ground for true practitioners of evil. It is, of course, Stephanie Beacham as Jessica Van Helsing, who is the focus of Alucard's attentions. She is the grand-daughter of Peter Cushing's Van Helsing and the cornerstone of Dracula's vengeance against the Van Helsing line. He has known death so many times at their hands.
