Anti-government protests continue in Budapest

(14 Dec 2018) Police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse demonstrators in the Hungarian capital as anti-government protests continued into the early hours of Friday. The protesters, who had marched earlier through the streets of Budapest, were confronted by police outside the Ministry of Human Resources building. The demonstrators are protesting against Hungary's recent changes to the labour code. Trades unions and opponents have criticised the amendments as a "slave law" benefiting employers. Some protesters also criticised the government's ouster of the Central European University, founded by financier George Soros, efforts to limit academic freedoms and increasing perceived government corruption.
