Ramadan is the month of the Qur'an, called 'shahr al Qur'an' in Arabic. Here, just as in many European languages, the word for 'month' has to do with the moon, yet in Arabic there is more: 'Shahr Ramadan' means the 'luminescence' of Ramadan! Ramaḍān, from the root-verb ramaḍa (رَمَض) — is about something sharp and acute. Its grammatical pattern faʿlān (فَعْلَان) conveys something superlative and current, in the now, reminding us that besides our fasting, there is a transformation that is happening in the now. Can we afford to procrastinate? We know that Ramadan is the month of tawbah/repentance, and might know that repentance is the door to all blessings, but do we realize that repentance remains incomplete without reparation? We should commemorate the month in which the Qur'an was revealed not just by fasting and generosity, but also by making amends: Our repentance must include restoring rights, repairing wrongs, and rebuilding trust. That is what tawbah naṣūḥ (توبة نصوح) is all about! This Ramadan let us also reflect on divine mercy through 'Arabi words such as yurīd— and understand that God yurīd/wills ease and forgiveness for us, placing them 'on the road' for us only to reach out to. Finally, we ask ourselves the most important question: How can we truly avail ourselves of Ramadan? Join us to rediscover the luminescence of this sacred month — a time when hearts soften, wrongs can be righted, and new beginnings become possible.
