Ridhwān Allah _____________ Many of us recognize the familiar noun riḍā, and often use the verb saying “raḍiya Allahu ‘anhu” (may God be pleased with him) when we speak of one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace upon him. The opposite of riḍā (approval/commendation) is sukhṭ/ سخط (disapproval/condemnation). The Qur’an however uses the noun marḍāt instead of riḍā to emphasize the seeking of it, even offering us a transaction where our wealth and our self/effort are spent for a most beautiful, eternal return. Marḍāt Allah is a goal to be sought through deeds, relationships, and even life itself. We stop to marvel at how God’s Message to humanity—known as Islam through the succession of Prophets and Messengers—finally reached completion and divine commendation when God announced: “…..on this day I have brought to completion for you (akmaltu lakum) your Standard of Accountability, and I have fulfilled upon you, my Favor, and I have approved and commended, for you, Islam as a Standard of Accountability…”(5:3) We are then introduced to the profound Qur’anic term Ridhwān, which is not merely approval and commendation sought, but rather a supreme, timeless, in the now approval and commendation! Through verses from Āl ʿImrān, al-Māʾidah, al-Ḥadīd, and al-Tawbah, we realize that there are those who seek God’s Ridhwān in the Now striving timelessly and tirelessly, and we celebrate their success, seeing that God Himself spoke of it! In contrast, the Qur’an warns of resisting God’s Ridhwān and the loss it entails. Our life journey concludes with the Hereafter, where God’s approval of His worshippers—and their contentment with Him—constitutes the supreme deliverance, far surpassing the fleeting mirage of worldly life. Ridhwān Allah is the ultimate aspiration: Upon a foundation of taqwā, the greatest reward to be sought is Ridhwān Allah. May we be its Seekers!
