How wonderful it is to get a taste of God’s bountiful blessings—Ni‘am—by counting a few mentioned in the Qur’an, despite knowing that we can never enumerate them! How could we ever count, much less enumerate them, knowing that each ni‘mah we might recognize holds within it countless ni‘am of its own? “Do you not see that God has made what is in the Exalted Expanses and the Earth of service to you, and has cloaked you with His Ni’am, both outward and inward? Yet among Cognizant Humans are those who argue about God without knowledge, guidance, or an illuminating Compilation.” (31:20 — Luqmān) How do we preserve God’s Ni‘am? Through Shukr—literal appreciation—by using the ni‘am themselves to benefit, causing them to multiply and appreciate (opposite of depreciate). This is why the opposite of Shukr is Kufr, which is a denial/covering of its capacity for growth. “Have you not seen those who replaced the Ni‘mah of God with Kufr, and landed their people in the abode of barrenness?” (14:28 — Ibrāhīm) There is a Sūrah also known as Sūrat al-Ni‘am because it contains ten percent of all mentions of ni‘mah and its variations in the Qur’an. Do you know which Sūrah that is? Listen, and find out.
