Lingering at the oasis of Marhamah, we ponder upon the magnificence of invoking 'Al Rahmaan', knowing that God’s mercy encompasses everything. The ayaat/signs of creation are more powerful than anything else; rain itself is Rahmah and yields rizq/sustenance to all creatures. In Q.24:1 we are commanded twice to be aware: Firstly, to be aware of our Rabb/ Lord-Sustainer Who created us, and then again, to be aware of Allah and the arhaam/wombs, which highlights the sanctity of the womb and the importance of the marriage union. When we realize what the Qur’an says about the ‘Meethaaq Ghaleedth/Solemn Covenant’ between husband and wife (Q.4:21), we come to see a liability upon husbands that has rarely been explored. We speak of Sternberg’s love triangle and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and by comparing these theories to what the Qur’an said, we come to understand much better versions that help us in our relationships. We consider what constitutes a successful marriage, and the role played by ‘mawaddah’, or ‘wudd’, which translates as ‘love with anticipation (Q.30:21). We also discover, to our surprise, how studies in psychology define passion, and realize that the most important manifestation of passion is nurturance. A successful marriage that nurtures our children is the best environment for ‘building’ and raising them to reach their potential, bearing in mind that the ‘rahim’/womb in which they came into existence and grew is where they first knew utter ‘marhamah’!
