The Department of Homeland Security estimates there are around 11.5 million undocumented immigrants in the United States."Our land is supposed to be the land of opportunity and I think people in other countries still see it that way and that's why they come over here," said Maria Rodriguez, a taxpayer.But that opportunity some say comes with a price. The Federation for American Immigration Reform looked at everything from health care to education and law enforcement. The non-profit claims illegal immigrants cost taxpayers an estimated 13 billion a year. He says while there are undocumented immigrants who don't pay into the system, a large number do."They also pay taxes, they have jobs and a social security tax is taken out of their check," said Nishikawa.There's also the cost of deportations.
