In Lesson 9 of the Play By Ear Challenge, we take a step back to look at where written music came from and how it has shaped the way musicians learn today. For most of human history, music was passed down entirely by listening and imitation. Musical notation—and later tablature—were created as tools to help preserve and communicate music, but they were never meant to replace the ear. In this episode, we talk about how the brain develops the neural pathways needed for playing by ear. Some musicians may feel like they “can’t” play by ear yet, but that ability often develops as the brain builds the right listening and pattern-recognition skills through practice. In other words, it’s not just talent—it’s training. We also discuss how tablature can be used responsibly when learning new tunes. Tab can be a helpful guide, but relying on it too heavily can slow the development of your listening skills. The goal is to use tab as a temporary support while gradually strengthening your ear so that you can recognize melodies, patterns, and phrasing on your own. If you’ve ever wondered why playing by ear feels difficult—or how to balance written music with listening—this lesson offers some helpful perspective as you continue developing your musical ear. Follow along with the challenge and keep training those ears! 🎶 #music, #musicvideo, #fyp, #subscribe, #dryrundulcimer, #playbyear
