1. This video is for educational purposes, aiming to inform people about Robert Schumann, one of the most underrated composers in the history of classical music (notably compared to his contemporaries such as Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, and later Brahms and Wagner, etc), what kind of music he composed, and the feeling/meanings it conveys to people. 2. I am not planning to monetize this video or any other content in this channel. I thank very much for all the resources provided for me by IMSLP and YouTube videos and wish for the listeners to try listening to each piece entirely. All the music sources can be found on YouTube. In this video, the music source is listed below. 3. One of the most prominent critical views on Schumann is his inadequate orchestration, which usually means using right instruments at right moments to provide certain textures or effects. While I do not completely disagree with this statement, it doesn't matter in the end. His musical ideas not only compensates for his so-called "inadequate" orchestration but overcomes it to a higher degree, giving enough basis for his name to be stand out along with orchestral giants, such as Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, etc. At the end of the day, I always prefer Schumann's symphonies over any other's. 4. For example, Gustav Mahler, who also cared enough about Schumann, decided to re-orchestrate Schumann's symphonies, which ended fruitless. Conductors nowadays play the original Schumann version and rightfully so. Two big reasons are simply not to disrespect Schumann, a genius himself who shall not be regarded less than Mahler, but also such re-orchestration hinders or destroys the original composer's genuine intentions and ideas. Brahms also preferred Schumann's 1841 version of his fourth symphony, but many perform 1851 version, which I also prefer. 5. While his symphonies are somewhat well-known and appreciated, the overtures in this video are not: very underrated and undermined among his works. Even in the audios I used in this video, which were the best I could find in Youtube, there were moments where I was unsatisfactory, where the performers/conductors didn't bring out the spirit of Schumann enough. Fun Fact: "In 1878, Tchaikovsky decided to compose a Children's Album of simple piano pieces for children inspired by the example of Schumann's Kinderszenen (Op. 15). Such was his admiration for the great Romantic composer that in 1882 he hesitated to take up Balakirev's suggestion of writing a Manfred symphony partly because Schumann's Manfred overture was so strongly embedded in his mind. In the last year of his life, when he received an invitation to conduct some concerts in Saint Petersburg, Tchaikovsky wanted to dedicate a whole concert to Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri, which in his diary he once described as 'a divine work'.
