Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum Free Online Program Buffalo Soldiers in Cochise County with John P. Langellier, PhD Recorded - Saturday, September 20, 2025, 11:00 AM - MST After the Civil War, Congress enacted legislation that for the first time permitted the enlistment of African Americans into the peacetime United States Army. For more than three-quarters of a century, these so-called “Buffalo Soldiers” professionally performed vital military missions in several states and territories as well as beyond the United States. In fact, from the 1880s through the years immediately following World War II, Black soldiers regularly undertook many important duties in Cochise County. John Langellier will share highlights of that story during his presentation. John P. Langellier, a long-time resident of Tucson, received his BA and MA in history and historical archeology from the University of San Diego, and a Ph.D. from Kansas State University with an emphasis on military history. His career in public history spans a half century with such diverse organizations as the Arizona Historical Society, Department of the Army, Department of the Navy, Wyoming State Museums, Autry Center of the American West, National Archives and Records, and National Park Service, for which he was selected as the principal investigator to study Buffalo Soldiers in the National Parks. He has written, edited, or co-authored over forty books, including his most recent title—"Buffalo Soldiers in Arizona.”
