This common weedy, hardy annual, scientifically called Stellaria media of the Caryophyllaceae family, is a wild superfood, high in vitamin C, beta carotene, and minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, and manganese. Folks usually think of it as a spring green, but it returns in the cool, moist fall weather. And now it is available to us as a final hit of green nutrient density before the winter slumber quiets the green landscape. Such a worthy free food, usually in easy reach. Check: It may be growing right outside your doorstep. Qualities & Uses This wild and weedy friend has a mild green, rich earthy flavor that makes it appealing to many palates: wonderful in salads or tucked into sandwiches, or added to soup during the last few minutes of cooking. It also makes a worthy Wild Green Pesto. Considered cooling, chickweed is often used topically for heated skin conditions such as eczema. It is also used for a plethora of other conditions from dry coughs to gout. Harvest Gather leaves and tender stems (even flowers) anytime the plant is succulent and vibrant (not stringy, seedy or dried out). This is usually in the cooler months of the year. Here in NY from early spring to early summer, then again from fall to snow cover. Chickweed dies in the heat of the summer. Habitat Look for it in full sun to part shade in moist, humus rich, fertile soil of anthropogenic sites, disturbed ground, cultivated land, gardens, meadows, and woodlands. Hardiness Zones (USDA): 3–9 Range: Native of Europe. Found throughout most of the temperate zones of the world.
