You’ve likely worked with a fog machine before, but what about a SmokeGenie? I recently picked up this portable smoke machine and I LOVE it! I like to get a little extra ‘wow’ factor with creative and atmospheric effects, and this little handheld smoke machine has given me a lot of new abilities. It can achieve so many creative effects in such a little package, plus it is battery operated which makes it perfect for taking on location or work in small spaces. When I picked up this tool, I experimented a bit and found these helpful features: (1) No wait time. Sometimes it can take several minutes for a haze/fog machine to ‘warm up’ and output smoke. This machine turns on and works immediately! This is great for me because I’m always in a hurry to shoot! (2) No odor / non-toxic. When working with expensive clothing or locations, sometimes I have to worry about the stale scent that fog leaves on the surface… but not with this tool! Plus I want to make sure if I am putting the fog directly onto my subject that I don’t have to worry about them breathing in the air. (3) Heat safe. Sometimes haze or fog machines can get hot, which can be a safety hazard, but this tool stays cool! (4) Variability. This machine can create a lot of atmospheric effects from fog, haze, dry ice effect and more. (5) Liquid smoke effect. I’ve never had a tool that could do this before! It creates the look of low-hanging fog or liquid smoke/dry ice that actually clings to the subject. It is otherworldly! For this shoot, my concept was to use the liquid smoke effect and actually have the fog “hang” in her hair. The idea was to make her look fiery as if she were actually smoking! We did some clean beauty shots and others with an outfit to make her look like a superhero! For this shoot, I worked with the Canon R5 and Canon RF 24-105mm (my favorite studio camera lens combo). For this setup, we used 4 Profoto D2s. Here’s a breakdown of the lighting: Main light: 10-degree grid (on the face) Rim Lights: 1x4ft strip soft with orange gels (to illuminate the hair/fog) Background light: Bare bulb pointed at the ground with red gel (for separation/gradient) Background: Savage Universal Fashion Gray The light is beautiful, styling is beautiful, but what makes the shot really WOW is the liquid fog effect created by the SmokeGenie!
