I've actually referred to Hoover ‪@pilot-debrief‬ for coverage as he offers far more expertise and exposure. This one gets me because I have a little time in a standard C172, and a little time over mountainous terrain, and a little flying in moderate to severe turbulence with windshear. It sucked. Highly DO NOT recommend. To the pilot's credit, this was a hot-rod 172: the military variant (T41-B) with an upgraded engine (195 or 210HP), faster and improved climb performance, constant speed prop, and increased gross weight. Tempting improvements to make it a true 4 passenger plane...in some conditions/settings. Yet, the performance upgrades weren't nearly enough for this flight and the plane crashed well before reaching the summit in unforgiving, remote terrain. The crash site wasn't located until nearly 24 hours after takeoff and first responders faced a substantial hike to reach the scene. What possibly began as a scenic flight over iconic terrain and perhaps lunch in the Denver area ended in four deaths. I present this not to place blame but to learn. And I did. I hope you do as well.
