The younger Madrid Pride lioness has recently started moving her three newborn cubs around. They are still so tiny and vulnerable as they begin venturing away from the safety of the den to explore the pride's territory—and the many potential dangers that lurk there. This week, the cubs joined up with her previous litter: the two subadult males, now just over two years old. When the three tiny cubs ventured too close, the lionesses briefly attacked the two young males. There was intense growling and snarling from these impressive lions. Lionesses often become aggressive toward their own subadult sons when they have a new litter. This behaviour mainly protects the vulnerable newborns from potential harm and helps maintain order within the pride during this sensitive rearing period. Subadult males are much larger and stronger than tiny cubs. Even without any malicious intent, these young males can be clumsy or rough during play, or overly dominant at feeding sites. Their size and strength alone can easily cause accidental injury—or even death—to the small cubs. As highly protective mothers, lionesses intervene aggressively when needed—growling, swatting, chasing, or driving the subadults away—to enforce clear boundaries and keep them at a safe distance from the new litter. Stick around to the end of the video to see the 3 cute cubs following their towering black maned father into the darkness of the night.
