After the Battle of Allia, General Camilius became Rome's Dictator to counter the Gauls. He reorganized the Roman army, introducing the quincunx formation for flexibility. The army was divided into classes: Hastati (youngest and poorest) and Principes (more experienced). Soldiers supplied their equipment based on wealth, with the Principes wearing Pectorate chest armor. Roman shields evolved from Hoplon to rectangular scutum. The scutum had a boss for offense and defense, covered in hide for protection and grip. Principes wore bronze Montefortino Helmets, with decorative crests. The Hasta spear was their primary weapon, used overarm in formation. In battle, Principes supported the front line, engaging if necessary. Skirmishers weakened foes before close combat. If Hastati struggled, Principes reinforced them. If Hastati succeeded, Principes provided backup. Triarii, the final line of defense, were called upon if needed. Overall, Principes' tactics aimed to maximize Roman army effectiveness by conserving strength and ensuring support when required.
