Philosopher David Gunkel and author S.B. Divya spoke to the IEET/AEC about robot rights on Oct 21, 2022. Does the conferring of rights on persons require the possession of specific features like self-awareness or self-interest? If those attributes can be faked by "philosophical zombies" is that a useful standard for robot rights? David Gunkel proposes that a relational approach to rights makes more sense. S.B. Divya's work illustrates how these different positions on robot rights may play out in the future. David J. Gunkel is an American academic and Presidential Teaching Professor of Communication Studies at Northern Illinois University. He teaches courses in web design and programming, information and communication technology, and cyberculture. Website: https://gunkelweb.com/ S. B.
