POINT#09-THE ROBBERY OF TITHE BY THE PRIEST IN MALACHI. After Judah returned from captivity and the rebuilding of the temple started, it’s evident that the Law of Moses was forsaken and the Levites violated the covenant of Levi during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah. At the dedication of the walls, we find that the Levites were nowhere to be found and they were sought so that they could come and dedicate the wall [Neh 12:27]. The Levites had gone into the fields and got involved in other activities rather than serving in the temple because they did not receive their portion as required by the law of Moses.[Neh 13;10-11]When Nehemiah realized what was happening, he spoke to the people and the people started tithing as recorded in Neh 13:12,Neh 12:46-47. The robbery of tithes and offerings that is addressed by Malachi, is a story that took place during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah and it’s evident that the priest robbed God tithes and offering and not the people of Judah, during this time Eliashib who was a priest in charge of the storehouse had removed the tithes and other offerings from the store house of the temple, and had given the room to a gentile by the name Tobias to use it as his bedroom. (Neh 13:4-11). It is evident that the remnant of Judah gave tithes and offerings during the days of Zerubbabel, Ezra and Nehemiah the governors, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi the prophets. But the Levites did not receive the food from the temple which made them neglect their duties and returned to their personal business. The reason why there was no food in the storehouse is because of the corruption that was with the priest who was in charge of the storehouse. Nehemiah dealt with the priest that robbed tithes and offering from the temple by; throwing out Tobiah the gentile and all his household goods, kicked out the corrupted priest and replaced them with priest who were considered to be faithful. [Neh 13:12-13] The corruption and the evil committed in the land of Judah between 500-400 BC by the priest during the time of Nehemiah is well addressed by Malachi who was a prophet at that particular time. Apart from robbing the temple, the priests had also intermarried with the gentiles hence defiling the priesthood as indicated in the book of Nehemiah, Ezra and Malachi. Many people today are manipulated to tithe because of the fear of the curses mentioned in Malachi 3.When you read the book of Malachi, God from chapter 1, 2, and 3 God is specifically addressing the Levitical priesthood and their corruption. In Mal 2, God curses the blessings of the Levitical priesthood because they did not give honor to God but they were offering to God lame, blind and sick animals as sacrifice to God, and they said it is of no importance to serve the Lord. God also accused them of saying that the alter of the Lord is contemptible and in Mal 3 God says he will send a messenger who will clean and purify the sons of Levi so that they can offer to God an acceptable offering’s in righteousness [Mal 3:1-3].This condition of priesthood is evident in the historical books of Ezra and Nehemiah. In conclusion, what is addressed in Malachi has nothing to do with the people but the priest and especially the church of Jesus Christ
