For the 2nd episode of "Handpicked" I wanted to showcase a truly rare, unique guitar from one of my favorite luthiers, Joel Michaud. The wood is extremely rare Pernambuco for the back and sides and the soundboard a silky set of Swiss Moon Spruce that feels very energetic and harmonically complex for this kind of music. The voice has a rare quality to it that feels mature in the low mids but also angelic and sweet in the trebles as you go up the fingerboard. A dream for any fingerstylist. The tune performed is my interpretation of Pat Metheny's classic “Letter from Home”--one of those rare portraits of sound that I think brilliantly illustrates the deeply ingrained drive people have for exploration and expansion in the face of risk and discomfort. I listened to this often when I first moved to Asheville to work for Dream Guitars in 2023 and was getting my bearings. I hope you enjoy this arrangement! For those wondering, this guitar is currently for sale at Dream Guitars so you can follow the link below for additional info. Joel's guitars rarely appear on the used market so I always make it a point to savor the time with them, hope it speaks to you as well!
