Beyond the Horizon short paper Pathways - a Journey into the Centre of Libraries Lisa Anderson and James Bywater - Library Service Manager, University of Northampton Abstract When students use libraries, their grades improve. Students who have little to no experience with libraries can show anxiety in asking questions, or making full use of available resources and services. Other students show their library anxiety through their absence, as anxious students are unlikely to approach the desk and show high stress when they must. At the University of Northampton, front desk library staff noticed some students had never encountered a library before and did not understand the premise of borrow and return, locating resources, or other core services like tutorials. We identified a need for an alternative where people could get their initial questions answered and find out information about what a library is and how it works, without needing to answer questions themselves. A non-embarrassing way to find out what exactly is a journal anyway. We have created an online guide to libraries in general, and our own library in particular. It explains how libraries work, through non-judgemental bite sized pages. The length of text is no more than a tweet, and short breezy but educational videos. After a year in development, we finally launched Pathways to our international students. It is hard to quantify the impact of Pathways but we continue to develop it to support an unmet, perhaps misunderstood, need.
