Rangapura Vihara can easily be considered one of Muthuswamy Dikshitar's most popular Kritis. For me it was a very special discovery, and even though all the previous kritis I had attempted were off beat and not the usual popular kritis, this was the first time I took up one such. Mostly because I realized that popularity meant that this kriti had reached the heart of many, and there must be a reason behind it. Dikshitar's work is like a labyrinth of ideas, concepts, thought processes and esotericism. Each kriti opens like a hundred petalled lotus, with a promise that somewhere in the centre lies a hidden treasure. Rangapura Vihara is a special one, where the treasure washes you over like a tidal wave as soon as it starts. Here Dikshitar has reversed the process. Before the first line finishes the divine has already been born, and you attach to the imagery of Vishnu incarnating as kodanda Ramaavtara (Rama holding the bow) immediately. This kriti rises above all constructs of the mind, and intellectualism and strikes directly at the devotion centered in the heart. On the auspicious occasion of Ramnavami, the birth of Rama, this is my humble offering to the wonderful discerning listeners of this channel. This is not a song, or merely a composition. It is an immersion into the idea of divinity as Vishnu, and then as Rama, the exploration of the bhava of Brindavani Sarang, entrenched in bhakti of Krishna. There is so much here waiting to unravel that it is impossible to convey it in limited time. My request is to consider this as the flow of devotion, taking me through its course, floating along the path of the river of divine consciousness. And my hope it that it takes you along with it in the same way. I bow down to the masters who have gone on this path before us and continue to show us the way. My explorations of Dikshitar’s work have been simply about ‘being present’ to experience these coordinates set up by these great visionaries, who saw more than the eyes could see and the mind could fathom. In this world that is waking up to the power of energies and meditation, this sahitya is the beacon of light.
