Rajagopalam Bhajeham On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami I offer this musical piece to the divine consciousness. Krishna the king, depicted in a musical composition that brings out a meditative and serene raga like bhopali in a grand magnificent kingly avataar, by the creative genius of Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar. Every raga must have various layers, and each rendition must carry within itself the capacity to invoke different elements and rasas. It is here that I found raga bhopali in such a flamboyant and magnificent form, invoking in my mind an image of a shining bright space where Krishna resides in all his grandeur, and I welcomed with open arms a new form of a raga that is very rarely seen in this light. It taught me that freeing oneself from conditioning is one of the toughest challenges of life… and therefore freedom from conditioning is true freedom in its essence. A lesson that the Lord himself got up to give in the form of the divine “Gita”. Let us together celebrate the “janma” or birth of divinity itself, this is janmashtami.
