More than a year back I taught myself this kriti, but only now I feel it has truly flowered in my musical understanding. Where I am at ease losing myself into the depth that it offers. Today on the last Monday of Shravan - the auspicious month of Shiva, I am dedicating this attempt to simply flow with the kriti which I have learnt to see as an ultimate ode to the perfect balance of the shiva-shakti or purusha-prakriti. As my endeavor to discover the great works of Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar from the Dhrupad perspective continues, my understanding of this specific Kriti - Ardhanareeshwaram - marks a pivotal point in this journey. Highlighting the use of swaras, the intrinsic movements of the Kriti and the intense emotional aspects, the Dhrupad perspective allows us a meditative and immersive interaction with a powerful Kriti like Ardhanaareeshwaram on today’s auspicious day. His left half (pArvati) is beautifuly decked and shines in red color, he is loved by ardhanArIswari and he is the remover of all fears. He is adorned with the serpents, other gems and ascends his stead nandi. He is worshiped by guruguha, Indra and others and is praised in Agama sAstras in kumudakriya rAgam and he is enchanted by unending veda chanting.
