Orpheus with his Lute (1944) by William Schuman (1910-1992) Text by William Shakespeare Orpheus with his lute made trees, And the mountain tops that freeze, Bow themselves when he did sing: To his music plants and flowers Ever sprung; as sun and showers There had made a lasting spring. Every thing that heard him play, Even the billows of the sea, Hung their heads, and then lay by. In sweet music is such art, Killing care and grief of heart Fall asleep, or hearing, die. William Schuman was born on August 4, 1910, in New York City, USA. He initially pursued business and songwriting before turning to classical music, studying composition at the Malken Conservatory under Max Persin and Charles Haubiel. He later studied privately with Roy Harris. He became the president of the Juilliard School in 1945 and founded the Juilliard String Quartet. Schuman became a key figure in American classical music during the 20th century, known for his symphonies, ballets, and choral works, often characterized by bold rhythms and American themes. Notable pieces include his Symphony for Strings and New England Triptych. He died on February 15, 1992, in New York City. Drawn from Henry VIII, the text imagines the mythical figure of Orpheus, the archetype of the ideal musician, whose music can calm the fiercest storms and charm all living things—even stones—with its beauty. This is sung by one of King Henry’s wives who knows that she will be beheaded soon and laments having lost the king’s favor. Christina Noelle Lopez, Soprano Mengni Tan, Piano Senior Recital
