Les oiseaux from Les contes d'Hoffmann (1881) by Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) Libretto by Jules Barbier Les oiseaux dans la charmille Dans les cieux l'astre du jour, Tout parle à la jeune fille d'amour! Ah! Voilà la chanson gentille La chanson d'Olympia! Ah! Tout ce qui chante et résonne Et soupire, tour à tour, Émeut son cœur qui frissonne d'amour! Ah! Voilà la chanson mignonne La chanson d'Olympia! Ah! The birds in the branches In the sky the stars of the day, Everything speaks to the young girl of love! Ah! That's the lovely song The song of Olympia! Ah! All that sings and resonates And sighs, in turn and turn, Moves her heart that shivers with love! Ah! That's the cute song The song of Olympia! Ah! Jacques Offenbach was born on June 20, 1819, in Cologne, which was then part of the Prussian Empire (now Germany). He moved to Paris as a teenager and studied at the Paris Conservatoire, but left after he found the education unfulfilling. Offenbach became a leading composer of operetta and light opera in the 19th century, known for his witty, satirical style and catchy melodies, most of the comedy being satire of Napoleon III’s courts. His most famous works include Orpheus in the Underworld and The Tales of Hoffmann. Offenbach lived his final years in Paris, France, and passed on October 5, 1880. In the first act of the Opera, the main character, Hoffman, arrives and meets the eccentric inventor Spallanzani. This aria is sung by Olympia, a mechanical doll created by the eccentric inventor. Hoffmann, unaware of her artificial nature, becomes infatuated with her. She sings of love, though, is unable to feel emotion because she is a doll. The charm of this aria lies most in the acting and the acrobatic cadenzas throughout. Christina Noelle Lopez, Soprano Mengni Tan, Piano Senior Recital
