Red Bull began sponsor a team in the Indy Racing League that was run and founded by Indianapolis 500 winner Eddie Cheever Jr. Cheever, who raced in F1, CART, and the IRL, also drove for the team. His team served as the factory team for Infiniti in the IRL and had a roundabout number of sponsors prior to Red Bull arriving in 2002 With this new funding cam a full-time expansion to two entries (and three entries for select races). Rather than going with the sure-handed and reliable veteran Al Unser Jr., Cheever decided to hire rookie Tomas Scheckter. Scheckter was simply brilliant in pace and bravery, but lacked a lot of the craft that was needed to survive a two hour race. What ensued was a bit of a rough season for the team, including a large crash damage bill. The team did win their first (and what would be their only) race with Red Bull sponsorship at Michigan with Scheckter Scheckter would not finish the season with the team after contractual beef with Cheever. Buddy Rice would take over in 2003. The good news is that the team had a remarkably clean season in 2003. The bad news is that their results were not impressive In 2004 and 2005, the team ran Alex Barron both seasons in one car, and Ed Carpenter (2004) and Patrick Carpentier (2005) in the second car. Toyota engines began to fall-off, leaving the team shorthanded to the superior Honda engine. After a clean 2003, the crash damage bill began to spike again in 2004 and 2005 As the 2005 season came to a close, Red Bull informed Cheever that the days of them footing their excessive crash damage bill was coming to an end. While not official word was given about their exit, it is believed that the expansion of their Formula 1 effort with the Toro Rosso entry in 2006, as well as their NASCAR entry, coupled with their little ROI on the IRL side, contributed to this decision Red Bull's footprint is not lost in IndyCar, as Red Bull Technologies designed and implemented the first IndyCar aeroscreen that was added for the 2020 season. This marks the most major safety advancement in IndyCar since the invention of the SAFER Barrier. While their on-track product left little to be desired, Red Bull's time in the IRL, and their lasting impact on the sport, should not be forgotten My Links 𝕏 https://x.com/Hickey93 Venmo https://account.venmo.com/u/hickey93 Buy Me a Coffee https://buymeacoffee.com/hickey Timestamps 0:00 Intro 0:31 '02 Homestead - Cheever, contact with Scheckter 3:04 '02 Phoenix - Cheever, contact with Lazarro and Sharp 4:32 '02 Fontana - Scheckter, contact with Noda 6:07 '02 Nazareth - Scheckter, contact with J.
