Wide top shot of crowd celebrating as Italy lift World Cup trophy STORYLINE Thousands of Italian football fans who had gathered in Rome on Sunday to watch the World Cup final between Italy and France on large screens celebrated wildly as their team won the game on penalties. Captain Zinedine Zidane gave France the lead in the seventh minute with a penalty, and Marco Materazzi equalised 12 minutes later. The game finished 1-1 after extra time and Italy went on to beat France 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out to claim a fourth World Cup title. Fabio Grosso, Andrea Pirlo, Marco Materazzi, Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Del Piero scored the penalties for Italy. Sylvain Wiltord, Eric Abidal and Willy Sagnol scored for France. David Trezeguet hit the crossbar with France's second spot kick. At Rome's ancient Circus Maximus 200,000 fans watched the game on three giant screens. Ecstatic fans waved national flags and lit flares as fireworks exploded overhead to celebrate the win. Within minutes of the victory, fans in cities and towns throughout the country were into their cars with Italian flags waving from windows to celebrate the victory. The final in Berlin brought the nation to a halt. This year the Azzurri's good performance at the World Cup in Germany brought fans much-needed relief and joy after a massive match-fixing scandal involving top Serie A clubs had left many of them shocked and disenchanted.
