A huge celebratory roar could be heard across the capital, Seoul, where one million people had flooded the streets to watch the game on big screens. Fireworks lit up the sky and scenes of unbridled euphoria unfolded all around the country. The Red Devils were two minutes from defeat when they snatched an equaliser through Seol Ki-hyeon to take the match to extra time. Both teams had clear chances to win as penalties beckoned. Ahn Jung-hwan then scored the golden goal which gave the co-hosts victory, etching his name into the pantheon of Korean folk heroes. The party across South Korea will run long into the night with wild abandon. The nation can then think about the quarter final match against Spain in Gwangju on Saturday. The fervor from all quarters of this now football mad society will undoubtedly go into overdrive. It's no longer a dream - the Red Devils are in the last eight of the world's greatest sporting tournament.
