Meditation 1

This is inspired by a recent performance I heard by Australian drummer David Jones and his partner Carmen Warrington. Drumset/percussion & Alchemy Bowls with voice. I started with the drum performance, then overdubbed cymbals, vocals and a brush sweep. I've used some echo and reverb to approximate the alchemy bowls. There is no substitute for singing bowls and so this is my impression. You'll notice on this channel that there are videos like "Drum Harmony" and "Drum Music." It was in 2011 when I first heard a solo piece by David playing drum set with singing bowls. This was a revelation for me. I had been thinking of the drums as having tangible harmony. Terry Bozzio is my favorite of the Zappa drummers. I started to go down that road a little but decided I'll leave that to Terry. I decided that the drums aren't a piano and that the huge setups weren't aligned with my values, or pocket. Don't get me wrong, I love Terry and what he's done. When I heard David's piece, it gave me direction. It opened a door of possibility and ways of expanding on this concept of drums being music. This is not the recording quality you'll find on one of Davids or Carmen's recordings but I think it captures a kind of essence. I'm using my voice in combination with close micing the edges of cymbals to try and create the impression of the Alchemy Bowls. I know that with some resources like better audio recording, that I could really make something special. We'll see how we go moving forward.
