IWCB plays John Williams Swings! by John Williams (Arranged by Jay Bocook) John Williams Swings! draws together three spectacular themes from Williams’s extensive film score catalogue: The “Cantina Band Song” is a memorable moment in the soundtrack of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977). The band has a name, as does their raucous signature tune: “Mad About Me”, performed by Figrin D'an & the Modal Nodes. This and more of the band’s backstory is fleshed out in the short story We Don't Do Weddings, by Kathy Tyers. “Catch Me If You Can” is the persistent, slinky title track from the 2002 film of the same name, inspired by the allegedly true story of con artist Frank William Abagnale Jr. Like Abagnale Jr’s scams, the triplets in the woodwinds and marimba just won’t quit. “Swing, Swing, Swing” underscores a manic dance/fight scene in the film 1941 (released in 1979). The tune can be described as a reimagining of “Sing, Sing, Sing”, the classic big band song written by Louis Prima and made famous by Benny Goodman. Our Conductor - Joshua McNulty: Graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium in 2015, Joshua is a conductor, composer and educator. Primarily a reed player, he has recently started to dive into brass instruments in addition to his conducting and education work. His studies with Dr John Lynch and Dr Anthony Clarke helped him build a solid foundation in conducting which have grown significantly while working with The FilmHarmonia Orchestra (founder and MD) the Inner West Community Band (MD), the Macquarie University Symphony Orchestra ; the Canaria Scoring Orchestra ; the Wellington Players; and the Strathfield Symphony Orchestra. As an educator, Joshua directs numerous school bands across Sydney as well as tutoring many students on their instruments . Joshua has always had a keen interest in music written with a narrative, especially as a composer and is very grateful to have had works premiered by both FilmHarmonia and IWCB. Joshua is especially proud to be given the opportunity to contribute to the growth of the Australian wind band community through his appointment as MD of the Inner West Community Band.
