Poroporo (Solanum aviculare) is a powerful rongoā (plant medicine) with a rich history in Aotearoa. In this video, I share how poroporo is growing in my backyard food forest alongside other native plants like kūmarahou, mingimingi, and whauwhaupaku. We’ll look at its unique claw-like leaves, its role as a traditional rongoā for inflammation and pain relief, and the history of how it was once cultivated and exported overseas for its medicinal compounds. This video is part of my Rongoā in My Backyard series, where I explore the native plants thriving on my whenua and the healing knowledge they carry. Join me as I walk through the garden, share stories of these rākau, and show how rongoā connects us to the whenua, the seasons, and the mauri of each plant. P.S I will often use te reo in my sessions so I have included a glossary of words that I use. GLOSSARY: Mauri - Life-force Karakia - Prayer Ngahere - Forest Tau - A calm state of being Rākau - Plants or Trees Rongoā - Healing / Peace Whenua - Land Whare - House/home #rongoa #poroporo #indigenoushealing #plantmedicine #nznature #edibleplants #foodforest #foraging Subscribe to my channel to be updated for more videos.
