The Hospice (A tribute to Pocket) by Joseph Rudell and Dee Witt Pocket has been a part of Dee and I's life for many years. she is practically a child to us. She has been there through all our tough times and great times. She was even a part of our wedding. At the end of 2017 she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Through the miracles of modern medicine, she was able to continue to have a great life. Towards the end of 2018 the congestive heart failure started to show some wear and tear on her. Of course, she acted oblivious to it. She continued to want to play, had an appetite for anything but her own dog food, and never missed an opportunity to lick your face or lay down next to you. On April 22, 2019 we've made the decision to help ease her into the afterlife. She's defied all the odds the Vet gave her for how long she'd be happy when she was diagnosed, and even up until today (her last day with us) she's been playing, eating all the things she wasn't allowed to have before, and generally being the best cute little companion we could ask for. Unfortunately we see her heading down a scary path, she's fainted many times, her heart stopping, she wakes up in the middle of the night coughing up fluid, she's constantly struggling with her breath, and she doesn't have the energy anymore to really enjoy life the way she wants to. It's a tough decision, but we don't want to see her suffer anymore. In Late March of 2019 I started working on a song, layering all the pieces together. through the course of making it Dee and I concluded that it was about our Pocket. She crafted the lyrics and melody, and I the music. It's a very sad song, but it was what we needed to channel our sadness over losing her. It's going to be pretty awkward without her little feet clicking around the house following us. We title the song The Hospice, because caring for someone you love who is physically struggling is a hard experience and it is emotionally draining. We ended up scouring the internet and our albums for pictures of her and put together this Tribute with some of our favorite pictures of her. We hope you enjoy the song and the pictures.
