Dozens of protesters shouting far-right slogans clashed with police in Woolwich, south London on Wednesday night following the brutal killing of a man in broad daylight. Scuffles broke out between police and protesters - including supporters of the far-right English Defence League (EDL) - who had gathered in Woolwich, where two men with butcher knives had earlier hacked another man to death before police wounded them in a shootout. In a shocking video broadcast on television, one of the suspects appeared to shout political statements against the British government, while waving a butcher knife in the air with bloodied hands. British officials said the attack appeared to be "an act of terrorism", possibly motivated by radical Islam, though it was not clear how they reached that conclusion. The afternoon attack occurred just a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks. Senior Whitehall sources confirmed on Thursday morning that the man killed in Woolwich was member of the armed forces. His family have been informed. EDL leader Tommy Robinson, who was in Woolwich on Wednesday night, said that British police and politicians "tiptoe around this issue". "This issue is political Islam," he added. "It's political Islam that's spreading across this country." Home Secretary Theresa May said security was being stepped up at barracks across London. Meanwhile Prime Minister David Cameron cut short a trip to Paris to return to London and will chair an emergency committee meeting on Thursday. The two suspects, who have yet to be identified, are being treated in separate hospitals.
