10/11/25 - On a beautiful Fall Saturday afternoon, I went for a ride at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum! Located in the tiny town of North Freedom (near Baraboo, somewhat close to Madison), the museum is actually pretty impressive! They have several steam and diesel locomotives, plus some neat coaches and cabooses which they've restored (and even several snowplows). The reason it is located here is that the C&NW had a 3.7 mile spur line to a couple of mines that branched off from its main route here. When it no longer needed the track, the museum bought it in 1963 and started giving rides on it! The route is real pretty, taking you on a nice, relaxing ride through the woods. MCRY 1256 was built (with same number) for the Army in 1954. It is a Baldwin RS-4-TC-A1, and as of 2025 was the main locomotive used by the museum for giving rides. If all goes according to plan, though, then C&NW 1385 will be pulling trains again in 2026; upon restoration, that will be the only operational steam engine from the Chicago & NorthWestern. Definitely check this place out if you live anywhere near Wisconsin! Thanks to Jim Connor for this video of C&NW 1385 in action. Hopefully, there will be more such videos soon! • CNW 1385 Oct 1989
