Rodeling: Perfect Anywhere Snow

March 18, 2023 it was ride your Rodel anywhere day here in the Big Hole Mts. A three-day window opened when wind slab, crusted snow and cold temperatures came together over a three foot snow base to make a solid Rodeling surface. Karen and I could slalom the bitterbrush and serviceberry like never before. The crust was indestructible with a one inch hoarfrost/unconsolidated snow surface. Karen surprised me with her gutsiness. She was making turns and playing the slopes like never before. I missed a few of my own turns trying to keep the camera on her. This is only the second time in decades that the snow was like this. Ordinarily we'd be the Rodelbahn, roads and snowmobile trails. It might happen again this season. I'll be watching. We're both riding Torggler sportrodels. Each slide was at least 3/4 mile long, sometimes longer. Proof once again that Rodeling can be done literally out-the-back door. No $100+ lift ticket. No fighting the crowds at over-priced ski areas. When the short-lived powder goes away, Rodelers come out to play.
