October 1944, Leyte Island, the Philippines. Private First Class Henry Ito — a medic, a Japanese-American from Sacramento whose family spent two years behind barbed wire at Manzanar after February 1942 — moves inland with Baker Company following the Red Beach landing. At dawn the company enters a valley. Fire opens from three coordinated positions on the ridge simultaneously. Two men go down in the open field. Henry assesses the ground and crawls across the valley under fire — first to Webb with a leg wound, then to Garcia with a penetrating chest wound. He treats both, returns to the company line, finds Sergeant Cross wounded, dresses his arm while Cross continues directing the company. Learns of two men down on the left flank. Goes there. Finds Henderson and Kowalski. Kowalski has an abdominal wound, the most serious of the day. Henry works eight minutes on the ground, then moves both men back to the company line. Three separate movements into fire. Five wounded men reached. All five alive when delivered to the medical point. That evening Cross tells him: doing your job and what you did today are related but they are not the same thing. Henry sits at the medical point in the dark and thinks about Garcia, about Manzanar, about his mother who made a barrack into a home with the same quality of attention he brings to a valley in the Philippines — working with what the situation provides to produce what is possible, even when the possible is not enough. In the morning the company moves again. Henry moves with the front element.
