Integrated Vegetation Management on Electric Transmission Lines Rights-of-Way: Effects on Ground Beetles, Vegetation, and Native Birds, brought to you be Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund). Presented by Dr. Carolyn Mahan. Integrated vegetation management (IVM) has been used on an electric transmission line corridor at State Game Lands 33 in central Pennsylvania for over 70 years. IVM involves the use of multiple vegetation control approaches (chemical, biological, mechanical) to promote a native plant community that is compatible with a desired land use. During these past 7 decades, research has indicated that IVM is consistent with biodiversity conservation with regards to pollinators, native plants, and game species of wildlife. Our research also has indicated that IVM is superior to mechanical (only) approaches to vegetation management in controlling non-compatible woody species of plants. I will explain the response of bioindicators of soil health (ground beetles) to IVM and share data on the ability of IVM to better control woody vegetation and promote other species of native, non-game wildlife. This research program is funded by the State Games Land Project
