Distance-related effects of termite nests on soil biota and tree growth performance in urban parks of Terengganu, a Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund) Webinar is presented by Petr Hedenec, PhD. This research was funded by the Jack Kimmel International Research Fund Grant Program. Tree growth was assessed using dendrometers and calipers at varying distances from termite nests in urban parks in Terengganu. No significant effect of termite nests on tree growth was detected; however, substantial alterations in soil chemistry—specifically total organic carbon (TOC)—and soil texture (silt and clay content) were observed. Clay content, silt content, and TOC were all higher within termite nests compared to the surrounding soil. The diversity and composition of fungal communities also varied with distance from termite nests, with fungal diversity being higher in the nests themselves, although no significant effects were found for fungal pathogens.
