SME Assembly 2024 - Setting the Standards: Innovative Approaches for SME Involvement

The SME Assembly is the most significant event for European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Hosted by the European Commission and the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the SME Assembly 2024 took place in Budapest from 18-20 November and featured high-level panel discussions and networking opportunities. The "Setting the Standards: Innovative Approaches for SME Involvement" policy workshop focused on integrating SMEs into the standardisation system at the national level. Building on insights from a soon-to-be-published report by the High-Level Forum on European Standardisation, the session highlighted innovative approaches by Member States, such as Cyprus and Germany, to enhance SME involvement. Key discussions centred on creating a business case for standardisation to raise awareness, improving tailored outreach to SMEs via business organisations, and increasing SME knowledge of the standardisation system and measures offered by national standardisation bodies (NSBs). Speakers included Sophie Mueller (Head of Unit, Standards Policy, DG GROW, European Commission), Johannes Springinsfeld (CEO, Springinsfeld Bedachungen GmbH), Alexandra Horn (Head of SME Promotion, Deutsches Institut für Normung), Athina Panayiotou (Director General, The Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation), and Andrea Raffaelli (Policy Officer, Small Business Standards).
