Electricity is supplied to our homes as Alternating Current (A.C.) at 220 volts through a system of three color-coded wires: the live wire (red or brown), the neutral wire (black or light blue), and the earth wire (green or yellow). In a household, all appliances are connected in parallel, which allows each device to have its own independent switch and operate at the same voltage without affecting other appliances. We track how much energy we use in a commercial unit called the kilowatt-hour (kWh), which is the "unit" used to calculate electricity bills. To prevent dangerous situations like short-circuiting or overloading, several safety devices are used in household circuits. An electric fuse, made of a lead-tin alloy with a low melting point, will melt and break the circuit if the current becomes too high. Modern homes often use Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs), which are automatic switches that "trip" or fall down to stop the flow of electricity during a fault. Furthermore, earthing protects users from electric shocks by connecting the metallic body of an appliance directly to the earth. While current electricity involves moving charges, static electricity refers to charges at rest, often created by rubbing two different objects together through friction. There are two kinds of charges—positive and negative—and they follow the fundamental law that like charges repel while unlike charges attract. This process is explained by the transfer of free electrons; according to the conservation of charge, charges are not created or destroyed, but simply moved from one object to another, leaving one positively charged and the other negatively charged Other chapters from ICSE Class 8 Physics book: Ch. 1 Matter • Matter, The Science of Matter - Physics Ch...
