Pip visits Miss Havisham at Satis House after she sends him a note. He finds her sitting alone by the fire, looking very lonely and sad. Pip explains that he needs nine hundred pounds to help his friend Herbert enter a secret business partnership. Miss Havisham agrees to provide the money and writes a note for Mr. Jaggers to make the payment. She is impressed that Pip only wants to help his friend and does not ask for anything for himself.
