The Nauvoo Expositor is often treated as either pure anti-Mormon slander or as definitive proof that Joseph Smith authored and promoted the polygamy revelation later canonized as Doctrine & Covenants 132. Both views oversimplify the historical record. In this episode of Captain Mormon, we take a more careful approach. We examine how it is historically plausible that a polygamy document or teaching resembling parts of D&C 132 was circulating in Nauvoo before 1844, without that document being identical to—or authorized by—Joseph Smith. We explore how insider affidavits, secret practices among some members of the Twelve, and hostile outsiders all intersected in the Nauvoo period, creating a situation where Joseph’s name could be invoked without his consent or control.
