Welcome back to BudgetTravellerChris.com, where we capture the unexpected side of life in Mexico — and this video is something truly unbelievable. On February 1, 2026, Puerto Vallarta was hit directly by a rare tropical-style rain storm during what is normally the driest time of the year. If you’ve ever spent time in Vallarta, you know that December through March are typically bone-dry, sunny, and rain-free. Drizzles are rare and … heavy rain is almost unheard of. Yet here we are. In this video, you’ll witness torrential rain pounding the streets of Puerto Vallarta in the middle of winter, something I personally have never seen in over 30 years of visiting this city. This wasn’t a light sprinkle — it was a full-on summer-style downpour, complete with runoff, street drainage overflow, and nonstop rainfall that sounded more like June or September than February. As the rain pours down, I explain how Mexican building drainage systems work, with exterior pipes designed to quickly redirect water away from structures — turning sidewalks into impromptu waterfalls. With temperatures still hovering around 28–30°C ( 82–86°F ), the rain is warm, tropical, and surreal for this time of year. Cars roll by getting free car washes, drainage ditches begin to fill, and the sound of heavy rain echoes through neighborhoods that almost never hear it in winter. This storm offers a rare glimpse into what Puerto Vallarta is usually like during the rainy season, which normally runs from May through October. Experiencing this level of rainfall in February gives valuable insight into how the city’s infrastructure handles sudden weather surprises — and why locals were just as shocked as visitors. Beyond the weather, this video also includes an exciting announcement 🎉 We’re planning our first-ever YouTuber collaboration right here in Puerto Vallarta during February 2026 !
