TO BECOME BIG, YOU CAN START SMALL - Homily by Fr. Danichi Hui June 16, 2024 | Sunday Readings: Ezekiel 17:22-24; | Psalms 92:2-3, 13-14, 15-16; | Second Corinthians 5:6-10; | Mark 4:26-34; Story: Once, there was an old man, who was broke, living in a tiny house and owned a beat up car. He was living off of $99 social security checks. At 65 years of age, he decide things had to change. So he thought about what he had to offer. His friends raved about his chicken recipe. He decided that this was his best shot at making a change. He left his town and traveled to different states to try to sell his recipe. He told restaurant owners that he had a mouthwatering chicken recipe. He offered the recipe to them for free, just asking for a small percentage on the items sold. Sounds like a good deal, right? Unfortunately, not to most of the restaurants. He heard NO over 1000 times. Even after all of those rejections, he didn’t give up. He believed his chicken recipe was something special. He got rejected 1009 times before he heard his first yes. With that one success Colonel Hartland Sanders changed the way Americans eat chicken. This is how Kentucky Fried Chicken, popularly known as KFC, was born. Lesson: To become big, you can start small, or even with nothing at all. You just have to start. Biblical: This is the lesson that we could learn from our Readings today. According to Prophet Ezekiel, God says, “I will take from the crest of the cedar and plant it on a high mountain. It shall put forth branches and bear fruit and become a majestic cedar.” Biblical: This is also what Jesus is telling us in our Gospel about bearing fruit. He even used two parables to raise his point. The first parable is about a man who scatters the seed on a land. He sleeps and rises night and day and no one knows how the seed would sprout. Biblical: This is what the second parable is about, how a mustard seed - the smallest of all the seeds on earth could grow and become the largest of plants. My dear brothers and sisters, remember this, those who enjoy harvest are the ones who worked best. No work, no harvest. So start working and do your best, until you reach your harvest.
