DO NOT BE AFRAID AND HAVE FAITH - Homily by Fr. Danichi Hui Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) June 30, 2024 | Sunday Readings: Wisdom 1:13-15, 2:23-24; | Psalms 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11, 12, 13; | Second Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15; | Mark 5:21-43 or 5:21-24, 35-43 Biblical: Our gospel today tells us two stories about what people usually ask for Jesus. The Restoration of Health and the Restoration of Life. (Hindi ba’t ito ang madalas idinudulog natin sa Diyos, ang maibalik ang ating kalusugan at ang maibalik ang ano mang namatay) St. Mark presents to us Jesus as someone who has authority over disease and over death. To summarize, let us know the similarities between the two stories: 1. Both of the main characters in the story are female. The woman with hemorrhages and the girl who died. 2. Both of them have connections with number 12. The woman with hemmorrhages had been suffering for 12 years. The girl was 12 years old when she died. 3. Both of them were called "daughters." Jesus referred to the woman as a daughter upon healing. The girl was the daughter of a synagogue official named Jairus. 4. Both of them needed Jesus. The woman approached Jesus and told herself, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.” The girl’s father approached Jesus and told him, “Please, come and lay your hands on her, that she may get well and live.” 5. Both of them were restored by Jesus. The woman was restored from bleeding. The girl was restored to life. Reflection: However, they may be similar in many ways. Both of them were unique in their own ways. The woman who was bleeding for 12 years touched Jesus with faith. There must really be something with the touch of the woman for Jesus to recognize it, despite the many people who have been touching him. When the woman told Jesus that she was the one who touched him, Jesus told her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you.” She touched Jesus with Faith, so she was restored her health. However, the experience of the girl was also unique. She was helpless for she had already died. But the faith of her father saved her. As Jesus told him, “do not be afraid, just have faith.” May iba nagnonobena kapag may pangangailangan. My dear brothers and sisters, in times of trouble and struggle, Jesus is reminding us not to be afraid and to have faith. We may not always get what we want, but in faith, we will always get what God wants.
